A Review by Marie-Claire – Blue Scar by Avant Cymru

Blue Scar at the Parc and Dare Theatre, Treorci, as seen on 12/7/2018 – was a refreshing and novel take on storytelling through the medium of hip hop and contemporary dance.  Dancers, aged from 12-24, took part in this exciting production with a national and international tour scheduled for next year – see www.avant.cymru for details.

The audience was diverse and the introduction to the show was bilingual.  You Tube star and MC Maple Struggle (http://www.maplestruggle.com) compered the event with great charisma getting members of the audience to come on stage and bust some moves.  Bboy Mclane opened the show followed by Act 1’s youth dance platform joining Avant who are taught in collaboration with Afon Community Dance who run weekly classes and deliver creative and contemporary dance sessions throughout RCT through both mediums of Welsh and English, they are based in Caerlan Hall, Llantrisant.

Some of the Dance Team started when they were 3.  CAST Performance Academy run every Saturday at Redhouse in Merthry Tydfil and are looking to expand in the future.  Please see www.facebook.com/castperformaceacademy for their exciting new ventures.  Closer to home in Pontypridd Dimensions Performance Academy are a multi-arts based troupe running classes in Dance, Performing Arts, Acro and Cheer for 3-adult age groups.  They compete as Dance Teams and have won the WelshFactor and are in the final stages of national finals invited to perform in New York next year.  So if you want to hear stories from the South Wales Valleys told in an innovative format look out for Avant and ask for their Artistic Director Rachel Pedley who also starred in this production
